I’ve been loving this tea lately as a warm + cozy drink in the afternoon. It’s nothing that unusual- literally just tea with lots of milk and a few add-ins, but it’s not my typical warm drink of choice, so it’s feeling extra fun to me lately.

It relies on just a few basic ingredients that combine to make a perfect cup of tea, every time.

Here’s what you need:

Black tea. I use decaf, since I like to drink this at all hours of the day and don’t enjoy the way too much caffeine makes me feel. If you’re wary of decaf, just be sure to choose an organic one so you know it has been naturally decaffeinated and won’t be full of chemicals. Rooibos is also a great option for a naturally caffeiene-free tea that’s still dark in flavor and color.

Milk. Use whatever milk you love in tea- I’ve been pouring in unsweetened almond, cashew, or coconut, but a quality whole milk or half + half would be great here, too!

Black Pepper. This doesn’t really make the tea spicy, per se, but it adds a little extra complexity and bitterness, which I love.

Honey. I’ve been using Luce Farm’s Hemp-Infused Honey (<–affiliate link) since I love it’s herbal flavor and health benefits, but plain raw honey works too! The floral sweetness of honey balances so well with black pepper.

Cardamom. Just a tiny pinch adds a nod to chai, while not making this tea taste like a chai latte- don’t get me wrong, I love chai, but this tea is special on it’s own…it’s not trying to be chai!

Milky Tea with Black Pepper & Honey

Tea gets brewed, milk gets warmed and frothed (if you want…totally optional!), and everything goes straight into a mug to be sipped. It’s kind of the coziest cup of tea, ever.

If you’re a tea lover, you are going to FLIP over this stripped-down version of chai that highlights black pepper and honey. And, if you still haven’t bought yourself a jar of Luce’s Hemp Honey, you really need to. It makes every cup of tea an extra special experience (and can help your body manage stress, fight inflammation and pain, etc). Milky Tea with Black Pepper & Honey

Time: 5 minutes
Yields: 1

Ingredients:

  • 2 black tea bags (I used decaf)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • 1/2-1 Tablespoon raw honey (more or less, to make sweet enough for your tastebuds)
  • 6-8 grinds of black pepper
  • 1 tiny pinch of ground cardamom

Instructions:

  1. Heat water in a tea kettle, then pour into a large mug with the tea bags. Let steep 5 minutes.
  2. Heat milk (in the microwave or in a small pot on the stove) until just warm, then use a hand-held frother or small blender to froth the milk until foamy. When tea is finished steeping, remove tea bags from the mug and stir in black pepper, cardamom, and raw honey. Top with milk, and enjoy!
